Hapalopus vangoghi – Gothic Speckle Patch Tarantula
The Larger, Emo Cousin of the Pumpkin Patch!
If the Pumpkin Patch Tarantula is bright, cheerful, and playful… then Hapalopus vangoghi, the Gothic Speckle Patch Tarantula, is its darker, moodier sibling. Native to Venezuela, this incredible dwarf-to-medium species has earned a cult following thanks to its dramatic charcoal-black coloration, mysterious gothic patterning, and beautifully speckled abdomen. Imagine everything people love about the Pumpkin Patch—but with a darker, more sinister aesthetic and a noticeably larger adult size. It’s one of the most unique New World tarantulas available and an absolute must-have for collectors who appreciate species with serious personality.
Dark, Mysterious, and Absolutely Stunning!
Unlike the bright oranges of its famous cousin, the Gothic Speckle Patch embraces a completely different look. Its velvety charcoal body is accented by intricate silver-gray speckling, subtle bronze highlights, and dramatic earthy tones that give it an almost gothic appearance. Every molt deepens the contrast, creating a spider that looks like it belongs in an enchanted forest. The intricate markings across the abdomen resemble weathered stone or antique lace, making every individual feel like a living work of art. It’s one of those species that photographs beautifully—but looks even more impressive in person.
Everything You Love About Pumpkin Patches… Just Bigger!
One of the biggest reasons collectors fall in love with Hapalopus vangoghi is that it keeps everything that made the Pumpkin Patch famous while improving on it in several ways. This species grows noticeably larger, has an equally phenomenal feeding response, webs heavily, stays active throughout the enclosure, and possesses an incredibly bold personality. Watching one explode from its webbed retreat to grab prey is something you’ll never get tired of. If you’ve always wished your Pumpkin Patch was just a little bigger and even more dramatic, the Gothic Speckle Patch is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
A Hidden Gem Every Collector Should Own
Despite its incredible appearance and fantastic personality, Hapalopus vangoghi remains one of the hobby’s most underrated species. It offers stunning coloration, manageable size, fascinating behavior, and easy husbandry all wrapped into one unforgettable tarantula. Whether you’re building a colorful display collection or searching for a species your friends have probably never seen before, the Gothic Speckle Patch Tarantula delivers something truly different. It’s quirky, beautiful, incredibly entertaining, and guaranteed to become one of the favorites in your collection.
