A Beginner-Friendly Blue Tarantula
The Royal Blue Gem Pink Toe is a perfect example of why Avicularia remain some of the most loved tarantulas in the hobby. This beautiful arboreal combines striking blue coloration with the calmer, more manageable personality that Pink Toes are famous for. For someone who wants a genuinely impressive blue tarantula without immediately stepping into the speed and defensive behavior associated with many colorful Old World species, this is one of my favorite options.
Royal Blue Coloration With an Emerald Sheen
The coloration is what originally inspired me to call this tarantula the Royal Blue Gem. These animals display beautiful shades of blue across the legs and body, with green-to-emerald highlights and a blue abdomen capable of showing a subtle purple sheen under the right lighting.
Rather than being a one-dimensional blue tarantula, the colors shift depending on the lighting and angle you’re viewing the animal from. Freshly molted specimens are especially impressive and can have an almost jewel-like appearance.
An Extremely Docile Personality
The specimens I have personally raised and worked with have been extremely docile, friendly, and non-aggressive. They tend to be calm and deliberate rather than defensive, and my established animals have been remarkably tolerant during routine interaction. Individual temperament can always vary, but my experience with this particular stock has been consistently positive.
That makes the Royal Blue Gem especially appealing to someone buying their first unusual Avicularia. You’re getting something that looks like a serious collector species without necessarily requiring an advanced keeper to successfully maintain it.
Much More Sought After Than Your Everyday Pink Toe
Common Pink Toes are readily available throughout the hobby. Animals sold under the A. geroldi name are considerably less commonplace, particularly once you start looking for established specimens and females. That gives this tarantula a great middle ground in a collection: rare enough to feel special, beautiful enough to immediately stand out, but straightforward enough that you don’t need years of experience to enjoy one.
The Royal Blue Gem offers something different.
You get beautiful blue and emerald coloration, an uncommon collector name, an arboreal display lifestyle, and—in my experience with these animals—a remarkably docile personality. That’s an unusual combination and exactly why this species has become one of my favorite Pink Toes to recommend.
Why Buy an Established Royal Blue Gem?
With very small Pink Toes, the keeper assumes the most delicate portion of the animal’s development. An established specimen has already successfully fed, grown, and molted repeatedly beyond those earliest stages. And when you’re buying a larger or confirmed-female Royal Blue Gem, you’re getting more than additional size. You’re getting months or years of development already completed, more immediate adult coloration, and—when purchasing a female—the long-term value of knowing exactly what you’re adding to your collection.
