The Peru Purple (Avicularia Juruensis)
A Giant Purple Pink Toe
Avicularia juruensis, the Peru Purple, combines three traits that are incredibly hard to find together: massive adult size, beautiful purple coloration, and a remarkably calm personality. With females capable of reaching approximately 7+” DLS, this is one of those Pink Toes that becomes dramatically more impressive as it matures.
Purple That Gets Better With Size
The defining feature of the Peru Purple is its coloration. As specimens develop, the darker juvenile tones give way to increasingly noticeable violet, plum, and deep purple hues, especially across the legs and body. Freshly molted animals can be absolutely stunning, and the coloration becomes even more impressive on a large female.
An Impressively Large Arboreal
Size is a major part of the appeal. At 7+” DLS, an adult female has a completely different presence than your average Pink Toe. Long legs, a substantial body, and an arboreal stance make a mature Peru Purple an incredible display animal—especially when she’s sitting fully exposed against vertical cork.
Surprisingly Calm & Docile
Despite the size, my experience with this species has been extremely positive. My specimens have generally been docile, calm, and confident, without the defensive personality people sometimes expect from a large exotic-looking tarantula.
Individual temperament can always vary, but this combination of giant size + beautiful coloration + manageable behavior is exactly what makes the Peru Purple such an appealing species.
A Collector Pink Toe Without Difficult Husbandry
You don’t need complicated husbandry to enjoy one. Give the Peru Purple a vertically oriented enclosure with excellent cross-ventilation, upright cork bark, plenty of webbing anchor points, and access to fresh water. Comfortable room temperatures around 70–75°F work well, and occasional light misting around the web can provide accessible drinking droplets without keeping the enclosure constantly wet.
Why the Peru Purple Stands Out
There are plenty of beautiful Avicularia, but very few combine the sheer size of a 7+” adult female with rich purple coloration and such a relaxed disposition. If you’re looking for a Pink Toe capable of becoming a genuine centerpiece animal rather than simply another arboreal in the collection, the Peru Purple is difficult to beat.
