A Pinktoe That Looks Completely Different

Avicularia sp. “Urticans Green” is one of those pinktoes that immediately catches your eye because it simply doesn’t look like the others. Instead of the blues, purples, and reds normally associated with Avicularia, this rare form develops a gorgeous emerald/olive-green coloration that gives it an almost completely different appearance from the rest of the genus.

Extremely Rare in the Hobby

This is not an Avicularia you see available every day. Urticans Green is genuinely difficult to find, especially compared with commonly available pinktoes like A. avicularia or A. juruensis. For collectors who already have several Avicularia species, this is exactly the kind of oddball that makes the collection more interesting.

Classic Pinktoe Personality

Beyond the rarity, this is still everything I love about keeping Avicularia. They are beautiful arboreal display tarantulas, straightforward to care for once properly established, and generally much more manageable than many of the faster arboreal genera. Give them a good vertical setup and they will usually establish a webbed retreat around cork bark while still venturing out where you can actually enjoy them.

Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Provide a vertically oriented arboreal enclosure with strong cross-ventilation, upright cork bark, foliage, and multiple elevated anchor points for web construction. Because your Green form can develop into a very large Pink Toe, increase enclosure dimensions substantially as the animal matures. A modest substrate layer is sufficient; prioritize vertical structure, airflow, webbing space, and accessible water.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Maintain comfortable room temperatures around 70–75°F. Prioritize excellent cross-ventilation rather than attempting to maintain artificially high humidity. Provide accessible hydration through a water dish and occasional light misting around the web retreat while allowing the enclosure to ventilate between applications. Avoid stagnant air and continuously wet substrate.

🍽️ Feeding & Water

Offer appropriately sized crickets or roaches approximately once per week, adjusting according to appetite and abdomen condition. Provide larger juveniles and adults with a clean water dish, while lightly misting part of the webbing approximately once a week to create accessible drinking droplets. Remove uneaten prey during premolt and avoid continuously saturating the enclosure.

🕷️ Species-Specific Care

The Emerald Green Pink Toe is an exceptionally rare Avicularia form prized for its metallic emerald-green coloration, contrasting reddish abdomen, enormous adult size, and dramatic color shift under different lighting. Your specimens can appear deep forest green, bright emerald, or even develop golden tones depending on the angle of the light. Juveniles tend to be more skittish, while your mature animals become considerably calmer and more confident. Despite its rarity and exotic appearance, husbandry follows the familiar Pink Toe formula: excellent cross-ventilation, vertical structure, accessible hydration, and plenty of elevated webbing anchors.
