A True Grail Species!

Commonly known as the Giant Blue/Red Grizzled Pinktoe, this species is famous for its unbelievably fluffy appearance, massive adult size, and stunning contrast of soft baby-blue legs, smoky grizzled tones, and a rich strawberry-red abdomen. It completely redefines what a Pinktoe can be.

Why This Species Is So Special

For years, this species felt almost mythical in the hobby. Very few keepers have had the opportunity to work with true Avicularia variegata, and even fewer have been able to raise them into adulthood and appreciate just how enormous they can become. Avicularia variegata is widely recognized as the second-largest Pinktoe species, regularly reaching 8+ inches in diagonal leg span. However, based on firsthand experience raising multiple specimens, there is strong reason to believe this species may rival—or even surpass—the legendary Goliath Pinktoe (A. braunshauseni).

One of my own mature males reached an insane 7 inches, matching my adult female in size—something that almost never happens in Pinktoes. This opens the door to a very real possibility: 👉 This could be the largest Pinktoe species in the hobby.

For serious collectors, that alone makes this species a must-have centerpiece.

Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Provide a large, vertically oriented arboreal enclosure with strong cross-ventilation, upright cork bark, foliage, and numerous elevated webbing anchors. Because this species can become exceptionally large, mature specimens need substantially more usable space than smaller Pink Toes. A modest substrate layer is sufficient; prioritize vertical structure, airflow, webbing space, and easy access to water.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Maintain comfortable room temperatures around 70–75°F. Prioritize excellent cross-ventilation over artificially high humidity. Occasional light misting provides accessible drinking droplets and localized moisture, but avoid stagnant air and continuously saturated substrate. Allow good airflow through the enclosure between mistings.

 🍽️ Feeding & Water 

Offer growing specimens appropriately sized crickets or roaches approximately once per week, adjusting according to appetite and abdomen condition. Larger adults can be fed less frequently depending on body condition. Lightly mist part of the webbing approximately once a week to create accessible drinking droplets and provide a clean water dish once the specimen is large enough. Remove uneaten prey during premolt.
