Giant Blue/Red Grizzled Pinktoe - Avicularia variegata
A True Grail Species!
Commonly known as the Giant Blue/Red Grizzled Pinktoe, this species is famous for its unbelievably fluffy appearance, massive adult size, and stunning contrast of soft baby-blue legs, smoky grizzled tones, and a rich strawberry-red abdomen. It completely redefines what a Pinktoe can be.
Why This Species Is So Special
For years, this species felt almost mythical in the hobby. Very few keepers have had the opportunity to work with true Avicularia variegata, and even fewer have been able to raise them into adulthood and appreciate just how enormous they can become. Avicularia variegata is widely recognized as the second-largest Pinktoe species, regularly reaching 8+ inches in diagonal leg span. However, based on firsthand experience raising multiple specimens, there is strong reason to believe this species may rival—or even surpass—the legendary Goliath Pinktoe (A. braunshauseni).
One of my own mature males reached an insane 7 inches, matching my adult female in size—something that almost never happens in Pinktoes. This opens the door to a very real possibility: 👉 This could be the largest Pinktoe species in the hobby.
For serious collectors, that alone makes this species a must-have centerpiece.
A Docile Giant Beauty - Without any Attitude
Despite its insane size and presence, this species keeps the classic Pinktoe personality that everyone loves.
Expect a tarantula that is:
- Calm and tolerant of handling
- Confident and visible
- Chill & slow moving, unlike many arboreals
This is the type of spider you can actually enjoy, without it bolting at every movement. It’s a showpiece animal through and through.
Why Collectors Want Them
This is not just another Pinktoe. A. variegata is that it combines massive size and elite rarity with the classic Pinktoe charm that hobbyists love. This is the kind of species that instantly stands out in a serious collection. They are rarely offered, highly sought after by seasoned keepers, and have that perfect combination of beauty, size, rarity, and personality that makes a tarantula unforgettable. If you want a tarantula that is adorable, massive, colorful, and genuinely uncommon, the Giant Blue/Red Grizzled Pinktoe is one of the strongest contenders in the entire arboreal category.

Avicularia Variegata Care - Like all Pinktoes, Avicularia variegata thrives in a well-ventilated arboreal setup. Provide plenty of height, vertical climbing surfaces like cork bark, and keep the substrate slightly moist—not soaked. Cross ventilation is key. Light misting on the enclosure walls allows them to drink naturally while preventing stagnant conditions.
