The Brazilian Black and Red - (Grammostola iheringi)

If you’re searching for a true showpiece tarantula that combines impressive size, striking beauty, and a docile personality, look no further than the Grammostola iheringi, often celebrated as one of the crown jewels of the Grammostola genus. Known for its jet‑black body, striking red abdomen, gargantuan size, and fluffy hairstyle, this species captivates instantly—making it one of the most sought‑after New World tarantulas in the hobby.

Size and Growth

Unlike many Grammostola species that are notoriously slow growers, G. iheringi puts on size fast, reaching an impressive 8 to 9+ inches maximum leg span at adulthood. This makes it not only one of the largest in its genus but also a quicker reward for keepers who don’t want to wait over decade to see their tarantula’s at full glory. Additionally, the Brazilian Black and Red has an appetite like no other! I’ve seen juveniles of this species do literal front flips, landing on their backside in order to catch a cricket and unless your spider is in pre-molt you will never have to worry about grammostola iheringi not eating

Temperament and Behavior

While very much considered a docile species, G. iheringi is far more active than the typical “pet rock” Grammostolas. Instead of hiding, they’re often out in the open, showing off their brilliant colors and gargantuan fluffy stature. This outgoing personality makes them an absolute joy to observe, though they can be a bit more alert and inquisitive compared to their calmer cousins. Especially when dealing with young specimens to 5 inch specimens. Once the species reaches 6 to 7 inches they tend to calm down a lot and act more like a Brazilian Black (Grammostola pulchra)

Grammostola iheringi Care Requirements

Caring for this species is straightforward, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and advanced keepers. They thrive in slightly cooler temperatures—high 60s to mid‑70s—reflecting their native Brazilian habitat. Provide a substrate of around 3 to 4 inches. Keep in mind. This is a terrestrial species of tarantula, that will not borrow unless she is gravid. That said, this species tends to spend all its time out in the open where she will lay a mat of web on every inch of her enclosure. This will allow her to better hunt her prey and dial in on where exactly things are in her enclosure. make sure you keep the substrate on the dry side for adult specimens while younger specimens should have moist (not soaked), substrate. Additionally provide the species with a water dish. Regular feedings, (once to twice a week) of crickets or roaches will fuel their growth, and if you do all that, your Grammostola iheringi (Brazilian Black and Red) will thrive under your care!

Why Choose Grammostola iheringi?

What makes this Grammostola iheringi truly stand out is the rare combination of giant size, hardy nature, and a downright puppy‑dog docile personality. This is not a fragile species—you’re getting a hardy beast with a strong appetite, and a calm, easygoing temperament. Unlike many tarantulas that prefer to stay hidden, G. iheringi proudly struts its vivid black body and fiery red abdomen in plain view, making it a living centerpiece in any collection. These spiders are incredibly hardy and simple to care for, thriving in basic enclosures with minimal fuss, while still growing to a gargantuan 8 to 9 inches making it the largest species in its genus. Their curious yet docile demeanor makes them one of the most enjoyable species to own, allowing keepers to handle them without worry.
