The Difference Between a “True” Pulchra and Imposters

The Brazilian Black Tarantula (Grammostola pulchra) is a true icon of the tarantula hobby, prized for its velvety jet-black appearance and puppy-dog tame personality. If you’ve been in the tarantula hobby for a while, you’ve probably heard of Grammostola quirogai—a species that has often been misrepresented as the true Brazilian Black. Due to Brazil banning the export of its native tarantulas to the USA, true Grammostola pulchra have become incredibly rare and highly sought after. Unfortunately, some sellers have taken advantage of this by importing the much cheaper G. quirogai instead, passing them off as pulchra‘s.

Here’s the difference:

• Coloration: Grammostola pulchra retains its deep, jet-black coloration for life, while G. quirogai fades into a dull brownish-grey as it grows. If you want a true, rich, black tarantula, accept no substitutes.

• Personality: While Grammostola pulchra is incredibly docile and relaxed, G. quirogai is skittish, hyperactive, and far less tolerant of handling—not ideal for those looking for a calm, interactive tarantula.

This confirmed, pure Brazilian Black is the real deal, a rarity in today’s market, and a true investment for any serious collector.

A Massive, Long-Lived, and Effortless Pet

Currently thriving on 5 to 7 large crickets a week, this Brazilian Black is an excellent eater, debunking the myth that they are slow or picky feeders. While their growth rate is indeed slow, the trade-off is a stunningly large and long-lived tarantula. Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Provide a terrestrial enclosure with a few inches of mostly dry, compactable substrate and plenty of open floor space. A cork-bark hide can be offered, although established Brazilian Blacks regularly choose to sit completely out in the open. Keep excessive climbing height low since adults become large, heavy-bodied terrestrial tarantulas.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Keep this species around 68–78°F with mostly dry conditions and good ventilation. Established specimens don’t require high humidity or constantly damp substrate. Smaller slings can be kept slightly more moist while establishing, but larger juveniles and adults generally thrive with mostly dry substrate and constant access to fresh water.

🍽️ Feeding & Water

Brazilian Blacks are reliable eaters but have the slow metabolism typical of Grammostola, so they don’t require heavy feeding. Growing specimens can be offered an appropriately sized cricket or roach about once a week, while larger specimens can be fed every 7–14 days depending on body condition. Always provide a clean water dish. Extended periods of fasting are completely normal, especially before a molt.
