Hapalopus formosus – Pumpkin Patch Tarantula

The Cutest Tarantula in the Hobby!

Few tarantulas have earned a nickname as fitting as the Pumpkin Patch Tarantula. Hapalopus formosus has become one of the hobby’s most beloved species thanks to its adorable appearance, compact size, and unmistakable pumpkin-orange patterning. Native to the forests of northern South America, this charismatic dwarf species combines brilliant orange markings with deep chocolate and black tones, creating a pattern that looks remarkably similar to tiny pumpkins scattered across its abdomen. It’s one of those rare tarantulas that even non-spider people can’t help but admire. If you’re looking for a species that’s colorful, unique, and guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you see it, the Pumpkin Patch Tarantula is an easy choice.

Tiny Size… Giant Personality!

Don’t let the small size fool you—Hapalopus formosus has one of the biggest personalities in the hobby. These little powerhouses are constantly on the move, eagerly exploring their enclosure, webbing extensively, and launching themselves at prey with incredible enthusiasm. Their feeding response is absolutely legendary, making every feeding day exciting to watch. Despite reaching only around 3 inches DLS, they behave like a much larger tarantula, giving keepers endless entertainment packed into a compact package.

The Perfect First Dwarf Species

The Pumpkin Patch Tarantula has earned its reputation as one of the best beginner dwarf tarantulas for good reason. They’re incredibly hardy, straightforward to care for, and adapt well to simple terrestrial setups. Unlike many larger species, they require very little space while still displaying fascinating natural behaviors. Their manageable size also makes it easy to keep multiple display enclosures without taking up much room, making them an excellent addition to both beginner collections and advanced breeding projects.

A Must-Have for Every Collection

Whether you’re purchasing your very first tarantula or adding your hundredth, the Pumpkin Patch Tarantula is one of those species that almost every keeper eventually falls in love with. Their vibrant orange “pumpkin” markings, energetic personality, heavy webbing, and fearless feeding response make them one of the most entertaining New World tarantulas available. They’re proof that you don’t need a giant Bird Eater to have one of the most exciting spiders in your collection.

Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Give Pumpkin Patch LRG a terrestrial enclosure with several inches of compactable substrate so they can dig and create their own retreat. Add cork bark, moss, leaves, or artificial plants to give them plenty of webbing anchor points. They’re heavy webbers and will often completely redesign the enclosure themselves, which is a huge part of the fun of keeping this species.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Keep this species around 70–78°F with moderate moisture and good ventilation. I prefer keeping most of the substrate on the drier side while occasionally moistening one area, especially for younger specimens. They don’t need a soaking-wet enclosure or stagnant humidity. A combination of access to moisture and good airflow works best.

 🍽️ Feeding & Water

Pumpkin Patches have an excellent feeding response and are usually very enthusiastic eaters. Juveniles can be offered an appropriately sized cricket or roach about once a week, while adults can be fed every 7–14 days depending on body condition. Always provide a small clean water dish for larger specimens and remove uneaten prey when the tarantula enters premolt.

🕷️ Species-Specific Care

Pumpkin Patch LRG are hardy, easy to care for, and fantastic display tarantulas. They stay relatively small but make up for their size with bold orange-and-black coloration, active behavior, and tons of webbing. Give them a terrestrial setup with enough substrate to dig and plenty of cork, moss, or other anchor points. Once established, they’ll usually create an impressive network of burrows and webbing throughout the enclosure.
