Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

A deep fossorial enclosure is essential. Give an adult female several inches of compactable substrate—ideally enough for her to construct a substantial burrow—and start one corner with a cork-bark entrance or pre-dug retreat. These animals will usually renovate everything themselves. Prioritize substrate depth and secure ventilation over open floor space or decorative climbing structures.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Keep this species around 72–78°F with moderate moisture and good ventilation. Unlike arid terrestrial species, LSD Earth Tigers appreciate substrate that retains some moisture, particularly deeper within the burrow. The goal is moist—not swampy. Allow some surface drying while keeping the lower substrate from becoming completely bone dry, and avoid stagnant conditions.

 🍽️ Feeding & Water 

H. devamatha have a powerful feeding response and larger females can easily take adult crickets or appropriately sized roaches. I recommend feeding adults roughly every 7–14 days, adjusting based on abdomen size and body condition. Always keep a clean water dish available, and don’t leave live prey inside if the tarantula has sealed its burrow or appears to be in premolt.

🕷️ Species-Specific Care 

LSD Earth Tigers are a large fossorial Old World species that do best when allowed to build a deep, secure burrow. Unlike many colorful tarantulas that spend their time on display, H. devamatha is all about creating an underground retreat and exploding out for prey. Give them plenty of substrate, a starter burrow, and consistent access to moisture, and they’re relatively straightforward to maintain for an experienced keeper.
