The Chilean Flame Rump (Hoemmeoma chilensis)
A Cute and Friendly Dwarf Species!
The Chilean Flame Rump is truly one of the most charming and personable tarantulas you’ll ever encounter! Known for its adorable personality, calm nature, and incredible handleability, this species stands out as one of the few tarantulas that will happily walk onto your hand — almost as if it enjoys the attention. What makes Homoeomma chilensis even more remarkable is its bold and confident demeanor. Despite being a true dwarf species, maxing out at around 4+ inches in leg span, it carries itself with the confidence of a much larger spider. Unlike most tarantulas that hide or burrow, the Chilean Flame Rump prefers to roam its enclosure, showing little fear of its surroundings. In fact, I often wonder how this relaxed and care-free tarantula survives in the wild!
Slow Growing, Yet Worth The Wait!
Patience is key with this species, as it’s notoriously, slow-growing — but it’s absolutely worth the wait. After raising this beauty from a tiny 0.025 or 1/8th of an inch sling for 5 to 8 years, you’ll finally witness its adult colors come to life. As that iconic fiery-orange “flame” patch on it’s rump begins glowing vibrantly against its velvety black body. Unfortunately, Homoeomma chilensis is rarely offered in the hobby due to the challenges of captive breeding and its painfully slow growth rate. But make no mistake — once you own a Chilean Flame Rump, you’ll wonder why you didn’t get one sooner. Its unmatched docile nature, curiosity, and charm easily make it one of the most lovable tarantulas in the hobby.
