A Volcanic Icon!

The infamous Lava Spider, Also known as Davus sp. Panama! This iconic tarantula is desired for its spectacular, molten lava appearance! Appearing like something that’s straight out of an active Volcano, the Lava Spider encompasses explosive vibrant reds that contrast magnificently with bold mat-blacks! (sometimes appearing dark blue under certain lighting)! If only my camera could capture this tarantula’s true beauty! Amazingly, this living work of art has a docile demeanor and is extremely tolerant of handling! Furthermore, the Lava Spider does not burrow, making them a great display tarantula! Now being a dwarf species, that’s a bit on the larger side… you can expect your Davus sp. Panama to max out at around 4 inches in leg span. However, what they lack in size, they more then make up for with their stunning looks and aggressive feeding response! This exact specimen is a Sub-Adult female that’s 3+ inches in Diagonal leg span (DLS) Luckily for you this individual is WELL past the vulnerable stage for this species! You see when the Lava Spider begins life at 0.025 of an inch making them very sensitive… But at around 1 inch Davus sp. Panama becomes extremely hardy. Tolerating both arid and humid environments! Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Use a terrestrial enclosure with 2–4 inches of substrate, a secure hide, and plenty of webbing anchor points. Lava Spiders are heavy webbers and may scrape out shallow retreats beneath cork while covering the surrounding enclosure in silk. A little additional structure is great for webbing, but they don’t need a true arboreal enclosure.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Keep this species around 72–78°F with moderate moisture and good ventilation. I recommend keeping the lower substrate slightly moist while allowing the surface to partially dry between waterings. They appreciate more moisture than many dry terrestrial species, but the enclosure should never feel soaked or stagnant.

🍽️ Feeding & Water

Lava Spiders have a great feeding response and growing specimens can be offered an appropriately sized cricket or roach about once a week. Adults can be fed every 7–14 days depending on body condition. Keep a small water dish available and make sure younger specimens never remain completely dry for extended periods.

🕷️ Species-Specific Care

Davus sp. “Panama” are fairly easy to care for once they’re well established. They prefer slightly moist substrate, plenty of ventilation, and lots of cork, branches, or other surfaces they can incorporate into their webbing. Smaller slings can be more sensitive to drying out, but specimens around 1”+ become considerably hardier. Given the right setup, they will cover large portions of their enclosure in webbing and often become much more visible as they grow.
