The Brazilian Blue & Red (Nhandu cerradensis)
Vivid Color Meets Pure Size
Introducing one of the most visually underrated giants in the hobby: Nhandu cerradensis, also known as the Brazilian Blue and Red. This fast-growing terrestrial species explodes into adulthood with deep navy-blue femurs, electric indigo highlights, and vibrant red setae scattered across the abdomen and carapace. The contrast is jaw-dropping in person! While most Nhandu species lean toward earth tones, cerradensis breaks the mold with a saturated, jewel-toned aesthetic that rivals species twice the price.
A Hardy Giant That Grows Fast
Reaching adult sizes of 6–7 inches in diagonal leg span, Nhandu cerradensis doesn’t waste time. From sling to sub-adult, N. cerradensis shows impressive growth rates, often outpacing its more common cousins. In ideal conditions, they can reach breeding size in just 2–3 years. They’re also bulletproof when it comes to husbandry—tolerant of a wide range of temperatures (70–80°F), low humidity needs, and their always in the mood to eat! Simply offer a deep substrate, occasional cork bark, and a water dish, and watch them thrive.
Behavior & Visibility
Like other members of the genus, the Brazilian Blue and Red has a bold personality. While not necessarily aggressive, they are known to stand their ground and occasionally flick hairs if disturbed. That said, their active and visible nature makes them an exciting species to observe—often seen roaming, rearranging décor, or resting out in the open. They rarely burrow once they reach larger sizes, which makes them a great display species for collectors who love seeing their spiders out and about.
Rare, Affordable, and Addictive
Despite their looks, Nhandu cerradensis remains one of the best kept secrets in the tarantula trade. Easy to raise, visually stunning, and still under the radar, this species is a perfect fit for hobbyists looking for an eye-catching display tarantula that won’t break the bank—or your patience. Whether you’re a collector of colorful species or just love fast-growing giants, the Brazilian Blue and Red is a must-have!
