Twilight Blue Earth Tiger - Orithoctinae sp. Ranong Blue
A Rare Jewel from Southeast Asia
Introducing the Twilight Blue Earth Tiger — a breathtaking, ultra-rare Old World tarantula native to the Ranong Province of southern Thailand. Belonging to the elusive Orithoctinae subfamily, this species is seldom seen in the U.S. hobby and is just now making waves with its unreal sapphire-blue hues and thunderous feeding response. These aren’t your average Asian tarantula—this species hits that perfect sweet spot between mystery, beauty, and attitude.
Unreal Coloration, Even in Deep Burrowers
What sets this species apart is the ghostly iridescent blue that glows across its femurs and carapace—a bold, metallic sheen that looks hand-painted. When the light hits just right, their body flashes between navy, cobalt, and steel blue, contrasted by black striping and cream-colored hairs across the legs. Despite being a fossorial species, many individuals have been observed sitting out near the mouth of their burrow or flattening out against bark hides, giving keepers plenty of photo ops without disturbing them.
Big, Bold, and Fast Growing
Reaching an adult size of 6+ inches in diagonal leg span, Orithoctinae sp. Ranong Blue is one of the largest species in its group. While it’s not for beginners due to its Old World venom a, it is one of the more bold and visible fossorial tarantulas you can own. Growth is impressively fast—especially when kept on slightly moist substrate with temps in the mid-70s to low 80s—and juveniles regularly double in size with each molt. That said, this species thrives in a deep, well-ventilated enclosure with vertical bark slabs or cork and a few starter burrows. Webbing is moderate but increases drastically once a feeding rhythm is established. Despite their size and speed, this species rarely bolts aimlessly. Instead, it stays poised—ready to grab prey in explosive strikes from the entrance of its hide. They are voracious eaters with a feeding response on par with Haplopelma lividum and Cyriopagopus sp.
