Columbian Royal Amethyst Bird-Eater (Pamphobeteus insignis “Columbia”)

Pamphobeteus insignis “Colombia”, crowned The Royal Amethyst Bird-Eater, is a tarantula unlike anything else in the genus. While many Pamphobeteus species are known for being bland as adult females with only flashy males, this Colombian titan breaks all the rules—it’s the females that radiate brilliance! This colossal species is shrouded in a deep obsidian-black body, but the magic unfolds under the light, where hypnotic purple iridescence floods its legs with regal intensity. Unlike the more common Pamphobeteus sp. insignis (Ecuador)—which lacks this vivid glow and appears as just another big black Pamphobeteus—the Colombian insignis is a true masterpiece of color and contrast.

A Majestic Titan Unlike Any Other

Pamphobeteus insignis “Colombia” grows into a massive 8.5+ inch behemoth, making it a true giant in the tarantula kingdom! Despite its monstrous size, it defies expectations with its remarkably docile nature, unlike most pamphobeteus species that are defensive, skittish and constantly kick hairs… In contrast, The Columbian Royal Amethyst is docile, calm and non-defensive, making it one of the only tarantulas in its genus that you could handle without the risk of getting itchy! Demanding admiration, its iridescent purple limbs makes it look like a living gemstone, a rare spectacle that few tarantulas can match.

A Collectors Dream

Due to its massive size, vibrant color, and shockingly calm temperament, The Royal Amethyst Earth-Titan is an absolute must-have for serious keepers. While its Ecuadorian counterpart’s  mediocrity, fails to come close to the remarkable coloration of the Colombian insignis! It prominently stands out as one of the most mesmerizing purple tarantulas in the hobby. Don’t settle for dull—bring home the legendary Royal Amethyst Bird-Eater today!

Experience Level - Beginner (only unusual care requirement is they’re sensitive to hot temperatures)

Personality - Tolerant of handling, docile, slow moving, non defensive and confident!

Age - 18 months old

Adult size - 8.5+ DLS

Life Span - 25+ years

Care - Keep Pamphobeteus insignis “Columbia” in a large terrestrial enclosure that’s 3 to 5 times the size of the tarantula! They do not burrow so only 2-3 inches of substrate is required! I would keep half the enclosure wet with a water dish, while the other half of the enclosure should be on the drier side! Lastly this species is very sensitive to temperature… therefore, temperatures shouldn’t exceed 78°F I personally keep this species between 68°F and 75°F. This is more important when working with slings but its better to be safe then sorry!
