A Beautiful Purple and Yellow Poecilotheria species!

Poecilotheria Subfusca Highland, also known as the Ivory Ornamental, is one of the most sought-after species in the tarantula world. Renowned for its striking appearance, this tarantula boasts a deep black body adorned with vibrant purple and yellow ornaments that make it a true standout in any collection. Unlike most Poecilotheria species, the Poecilotheria Subfusca Highland stays on the smaller side, maxing out at around 6+ inches in diagonal leg span. This adaptation is due to the high elevations it inhabits in the wild. Interestingly, these cooler, higher altitudes have also contributed to the Ivory Ornamental’s slower and docile nature—making it unique among Poecilotheria. In fact, it’s the only species in the genus observed living communally in the wild! With that being said, keep Poecilotheria Subfusca Highland in an arboreal enclosure with vertical cork bark and lousily packed substrate! Most importantly, keep Poecilotheria Subfusca Highland (Ivory Ornamental) on the cooler side! I recommend temps of 68°F to 72°F! Due to the high elevations that the species comes from It is essential that you keep them in these cooler temps as they won’t be able to breed in a warmer climate!

Care & Husbandry Guide

🏠 Enclosure & Substrate

Use a tall, well-ventilated arboreal enclosure with vertical cork bark, additional climbing surfaces, and a few inches of loosely packed, moisture-retentive substrate. Give the spider a dark vertical retreat behind the cork and enough usable height to move naturally. Keep the substrate somewhat moist, but never waterlogged. 

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

68–72°F is ideal, and I would not allow them to remain above 75°F for prolonged periods. This is one of the coolest-kept Poecilotheria in the hobby. Maintain slightly moist substrate with strong ventilation rather than trying to create a hot, saturated enclosure. Their highland origin is exactly why this temperature requirement matters.

 🍽️ Feeding & Water 

Feed juveniles appropriately sized crickets or roaches approximately once weekly, with adults fed every 7–14 days depending on body condition. Keep a clean water dish available at all times. P. subfusca Highland tends to grow slower than many other Poecilotheria, so don’t try to compensate by overheating or excessively power-feeding them. 

🕷️ Species-Specific Care 

The most important thing with P. subfusca Highland is keeping it cool. This is a high-elevation Poecilotheria adapted to conditions considerably cooler than most of the genus. Give it a tall arboreal enclosure with vertical cork bark, a dark retreat, good cross ventilation, and substrate that retains some moisture. This species does well with somewhat moist conditions, but cool temperatures and fresh airflow are essential.
